Formula 1 in Azerbayjan
Since 2016, Baku has joined the number of world capitals hosting the legendary Formula 1 World Circuit Racing Championship. Especially for this, a 6-kilometer Baku City Circuit (“Baku Street” route), created by the “father” of all today's Formula One tracks by Hermann Tilke, was erected in the historic center of the city, along the Baku Boulevard. The state-of-the-art engineering creation with ten spacious spectator stands and a developed infrastructure became the venue for the 8th stage of the international competition, called Azerbaijan Grand Prix.
The race in Baku is similar in structure to the exciting Formula 1 street stages in Monaco and Singapore. The “Grand Prix of Azerbaijan” passes along a picturesque route covering the most important sights of the Azerbaijani capital. The starting point of the race is located on the central square of Azadlig Avenue ("Freedom Square"). In the course of the movement, riders pass such emblematic places as the Government House, the monumental complex Bayrah Meydan (“The State Flag Square”), as well as the fortress walls of the old Baku quarter of Icheri Sheher.
The basis of the Azerbaijan Grand Prix entertainment program is a large street concert with the participation of world pop stars in the National Seaside Park. In 2016, such celebrities as Enrique Iglesias, Farrell Williams and Chris Brown appeared as headliners. The main guest artists of the music weekend of F1 in 2017 were Mariah Carey, Tarkan, Nicole Scherzinger and the band The Black Eyed Peas. In addition to the fiery concerts, guests of the grand sports festival can attend autograph sessions of all the favorites of the “Grand Prix of Azerbaijan”.
