International Festival of sweets in Sheki
The festival was held in Sheki not by chance: this city is called the “sweetest” in Azerbaijan. Here they prepare their own special walnut baklava, the confectioner's counters are full of the amount of the Lukums they have invented and the types of preserves are not counted at all.
The event is held for the second time and it was organized by the Ministry of Culture and Tourism, the Center for National Cookery of Azerbaijan and the Executive Authority of Sheki. Among the honored guests of the festival were the head of the Sheki executive power Elkhan Usupov and the French Ambassador to Azerbaijan Pascal Monnier.
”The festival aims to popularize the national cuisine as part of the intangible culture of Azerbaijan and of course reveal the potential of Sheki,”said Elkhan Usupov.
Besides the fact that it was necessary to cook deliciously, it was also necessary to put everything beautifully on the table to attract the attention of the festival visitors.
Within the festival two contests were held: among foreign guests and Azerbaijani chefs. The head of the jury was entrusted to the director of the Russian School of Chocolate at the A. Korkunov factory Elena Suchkova. The choice was not easy and after a long meeting a “verdict” was rendered. The first place was shared by culinary specialists from Romania, Kazakhstan and France, the second place by Serbia and Russia, and the third place by masters from Moldova, Kyrgyzstan and Northern Cyprus. Among Azerbaijani culinary specialists, Ganja came out on top, Sheki and Zagatala shared the second place and Naftalan, Agdash, Oguz and Goychay took the third place.
