International Festival "MUGAM'S WORLD" in Baku

The improvisational music genre mugham  included in the UNESCO World Heritage List  is rightfully considered one of the greatest treasures of Azerbaijani culture. "The World of Mugam" festival in Baku not only provides an opportunity to hear the play of the best mugam performers, but also introduces the whole variety of related music styles from other countries - Arab-Turkish makam, Indian raga, Uzbek shashmaq, Iranian Destgy, Uygur flour.

The mugham festival is organized with the support of the Heydar Aliyev Foundation, as well as the Ministry of Culture and Tourism of Azerbaijan. It is held every two years - starting in 2009 - at the sites of the best cultural institutions of Baku, including the grand building of the International Mugham Center. The basis of the music festival is an international competition of mugam performers, as well as mixed performances, combining mugham with such classical genres as opera, ballet and symphonic music. In addition to the concerts, a scientific symposium on the popularization of Azerbaijani mugham is held in the framework of the festival, in which leading figures of culture and music business from different countries take part. The festival ends with a grand gala concert on the stage of the Heydar Aliyev Palace
